Developing Wingers: Dribbling and Crossing Foundations for Young Players
Working with young players, especially those keen on playing out wide, often means focusing on two core skills: dribbling and crossing. These aren't just about flashy moves; they're fundamental to creating chances and dictating play from the flanks. At Pitch Ready Football, we see how mastering these early on gives children a real edge as they progress. Let's look at how we approach these vital areas in winger training for children.
Understanding the Winger's Role
Firstly, it’s not just about pace. A good winger needs game intelligence to decide when to take on a defender, when to pass, and where to deliver a cross. Their primary job is to create problems for the opposition full-back and to get the ball into dangerous areas. For younger players, we simplify this: get the ball, run with it, and look up to see if anyone's in the box.
Dribbling: More Than Just Running with the Ball
Effective dribbling involves close control, changes of pace, and quick changes of direction. It's about being comfortable on the ball under pressure.
- Ball Mastery: We start with exercises that improve a child's relationship with the ball. Simple cone dribbling, using all surfaces of the foot (inside, outside, laces), and keeping the ball close. This builds confidence and familiarity.
- 1v1 Scenarios: As comfort grows, we introduce 1v1 situations. This is where decisions are made. Does the player go inside or outside? Do they try a skill move? The aim isn't just to beat the defender, but to create space. We often run specific dribbling 1v1 coaching sessions because this scenario is so critical for wingers.
- Protecting the Ball: For young wingers, learning to shield the ball and use their body effectively is crucial. This helps them retain possession even if they can't beat their marker outright. Exercises involving a static defender applying light pressure can be very beneficial.
- Heads Up: A common pitfall for young dribblers is staring at the ball. We constantly encourage players to keep their heads up, scan the pitch, and be aware of teammates and opponents. Peripheral vision is key here.
Crossing: Delivery and Decision-Making
Once a winger has beaten their defender or created space, the next step is often delivering a cross. This is an art form that takes practice.
- Technique First: We focus on the mechanics of striking the ball for a cross. This isn't just blasting it. It involves body shape, foot contact, and follow-through. We break it down:
Approach: Running at the ball, often at an angle. Plant Foot: Alongside the ball, pointing towards the target area. Striking Foot: Using the laces or inside of the foot for accuracy and whip. Follow Through: Kicking through the ball, not just at it.
- Types of Crosses: While younger players might initially just aim for 'get it in the box,' we introduce the idea of different types:
Whipped/Driven: Low and fast across the six-yard box. Lofted/Arced: For players arriving later in the box or to bypass defenders. * Cut-back: Playing the ball back from the byline to a support player.
- Target Practice: We set up scenarios with targets (cones, small goals, or even us!) in the box to give players something specific to aim for. This helps with accuracy and understanding trajectories.
- Crossing Under Pressure: Eventually, we add passive defenders to simulate game situations. The winger needs to find a good crossing position before the defender closes them down.
- Decision Making: This links back to dribbling. A winger needs to decide when to cross. Is there someone in the box? Is the defender too close? Can I take one more touch to get a clearer angle? These are decisions we discuss and practice in small-sided games.
At Pitch Ready Football, whether we're coaching in Enfield, Winchmore Hill, or Oakwood, our aim is always to equip young players with the practical skills and confidence they need. Developing wingers who can dribble effectively and deliver dangerous crosses can genuinely transform a team's attacking play.
