Keeping Sharp This Summer
For parents exploring summer football training plan, here's what our Pitch Ready coaches suggest.
The summer holidays offer a fantastic opportunity for young footballers. With more daylight and a break from school commitments, it's the perfect time to either catch up, consolidate skills, or get ahead for the next season. However, without a structured approach, it’s easy for good habits to slip. This post outlines how young players can maintain and even improve their game over the longer break.
Consistency Over Intensity
The key to effective summer training isn't about cramming in endless hours every single day. It's about consistent, manageable sessions. Aim for 3-4 structured sessions a week, with active recovery or lighter, fun activities on other days. This prevents burnout and allows the body to adapt and recover effectively. Each session doesn't need to be long – 45 to 60 minutes of focused work can be incredibly beneficial.
Technical Skills Focus Areas
Summer is ideal for drilling individual technical skills without the pressure of competitive matches. Here are some areas to concentrate on:
- Ball Mastery: Close control, dribbling with both feet, specific turns (Cruyff, L-turn, step-overs). Set up simple cone grids in your garden or a local park in Enfield Chase and challenge your child to navigate them using different techniques.
- Passing & Receiving: Work on accuracy and weight of pass. Even against a wall, players can practice one-touch passing, receiving with different parts of the foot, and passing over varying distances.
- Shooting & Finishing: If space allows, practice striking the ball with power and precision. Focus on different shot types – instep drive, laces, finesse shots into corners.
- First Touch: This is arguably the most crucial skill. Use a rebounder or a partner to serve balls from different angles and speeds, working on bringing the ball under control quickly and into space.
Physical Components to Maintain
While technical skills are paramount, don't neglect physical attributes.
- Agility & Coordination: Ladder drills, cone circuits, and simple shuttle runs are excellent for improving foot speed, change of direction, and overall body control.
- Speed: Short sprints (10-30 metres) with good recovery focus on explosiveness. Ensure proper warm-up before any speed work.
- Stamina (Game-Specific): Instead of long, monotonous runs, incorporate short, sharp bursts of activity followed by brief rests – mimicking the demands of a football match. Small-sided games (even 1v1 or 2v2) are great for this.
The Importance of Play and Fun
Remember, football should remain enjoyable. Alongside structured drills, encourage plenty of unstructured play. Kickabouts with friends in Oakwood Park, or even just juggling in the garden at home, help foster creativity and love for the game. This informal play often leads to natural skill development without even realising it.
Nutrition and Recovery
With increased activity, proper nutrition and hydration become even more vital. Ensure your child is drinking plenty of water throughout the day, especially before, during, and after sessions. A balanced diet rich in whole foods will provide the energy needed for training and aid recovery. Adequate sleep is also non-negotiable for physical and mental rejuvenation.
For players looking for a more structured environment, our focussed holiday training blocks offer concentrated sessions designed to make significant improvements over the break. These are often invaluable for keeping players sharp and motivated.
The summer is a fantastic opportunity for growth. By balancing structured technical work, physical conditioning, and plenty of fun, your young footballer can return to their club stronger, more skillful, and more confident than ever.
