Ball mastery drills children can practise in the garden

Simple ball mastery drills your child can practise in the garden between coaching sessions. No pitch, no goal, just a ball and 10 minutes.

For parents exploring ball mastery drills for children, here's what our Pitch Ready coaches suggest. You can see how we build this up in our ball mastery sessions.

Real progress happens between sessions. These are the exact ball-mastery drills our coaches send families home with — designed for a small garden, no equipment, 10 minutes a day.

Warm-up: sole rolls

Roll the ball side to side with the sole of each foot. 30 seconds each foot. This wakes up the touch.

Toe taps

Alternate toes tapping the top of the ball, staying light on the standing foot. Start slow, build speed.

Inside–outside dribble

Push the ball with the inside of the foot, then the outside, walking forwards. Every touch is small.

V-drag

Pull the ball back with the sole, push it out at 45 degrees with the inside. This becomes a real move.

Figure of 8

Two markers a metre apart. Dribble through them in a figure of 8 using both feet.

Making it stick

10 minutes daily beats 60 minutes on Saturday. Our coaches build these drills into every ball mastery session so children know exactly what to practise at home.

FAQs

Do they need a specific ball?

A size 3 for under-8s, size 4 for 8–12s, size 5 for older. Slightly deflated helps beginners.

How long until we see improvement?

Two to three weeks of daily 10-minute practice.

Want a coach to build a custom home programme? Book a free assessment.

The benefits of repetition at home

Ball mastery is all about the relationship between the player and the ball. In a team environment, a child might only touch the ball for a few minutes in total during a ninety minute match. By encouraging small, consistent sessions in the garden, you significantly increase their number of touches. These ball mastery drills for children focus on using all parts of the foot, including the sole, the inside, and the outside.

Practising at home allows a young player to experiment without the pressure of a match result or the eyes of a large group. This low pressure environment is perfect for building confidence. Even a ten minute block focusing on toe taps, sole rolls, or side-to-side shuffles can make a noticeable difference to how comfortable a child feels when the ball is at their feet. It is not about speed initially, it is about rhythm and control.

How our one-to-one sessions help

While garden practice is excellent for building volume, our individual coaching sessions in Enfield provide the technical correction needed to ensure those habits are effective. We observe the fine details, such as body weight distribution and the positioning of the standing foot. These small adjustments help players move more efficiently and maintain balance while performing complex movements.

Our coaches provide a structured environment where we can introduce new variations of ball mastery drills for children as they progress. We focus on the mechanics of each movement, helping the player understand why a specific touch is used in a game situation. This transition from individual practice to guided coaching helps bridge the gap between simple repetition and genuine technical proficiency. By combining home practice with focused one-to-one attention, players can develop a more well rounded set of technical skills at a pace that suits their individual development journey.
